African journalists fault western media over ‘racist’ coverage of Ukraine war

As the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues into the sixth day, a network of African journalists, the Foreign Press Association Africa, has criticised western media’s ‘skewed’ coverage of the war.
In a statement seen by Peoples Gazette on Tuesday, the association faulted western media’s narrative suggesting it was unthinkable to witness violence in white-dominated countries.
It described as disturbing how the western media “publicly express about the distinction they see between war and suffering in Ukraine and those that have to take place in poor countries.”
The press association accused western media of painting the black race as lovers of conflict and war, arguing that the narratives being pushed were a gross misrepresentation.
“People who are not white are not more innately prone and habitual to violence and suffering. People who are not white are no less civil or incapable of solving conflict,” it cleared.
The association demanded that the skewed coverage be widely condemned by media establishments in the west.
The criticism comes shortly after a Middle Eastern journalist network faulted the reportage of the war by western media and urging them to be “mindful of implicit and explicit bias” in their coverage.
