Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday said that the second phase of the Adiyan Water Works when completed would provide 70 million gallons of water daily to residents.

Mr Sanwo-Olu said this during an inspection of the Adiyan water works in Ogun State, disclosing that work on the project had reached 80 per cent completion level.

He said, “I think the main pride for us is what we have seen in Adiyan. Adiyan II is meant to produce 70 million gallons per day and you can see from the inspection we had today, it’s about 80 per cent completed. The electromagnetic and electromechanical work which has to do with the pump, all the containers are there, so they will start fixing.  I am told about 70 per cent to 75 per cent of all the equipment are on site, which is the raw water which is where they’re laying this pipe all the way to Akute into Ogun River. We believe that the contractor is working on the three components. They have assured us that in another 10 to 12 months, this whole place will be a completely different story.’’

The governor commended the contractor and the community for working harmoniously to provide potable water for residents of Lagos State.

The governor stated, “These pipes are going all the way to Akute which is where the water will be taken from Ogun River and it’s from there it gets transported to Adiyan. The locals are happy as much as we are, because there’s full restitution, as you can see from the reception we received. Compensation has been paid by the Lagos and Ogun states governments.’’

He, however, said that a lot still needed to be done to ensure that the project was completed before the end of his second term in office.

He noted, “ The job is not finished yet, we still have a lot of work to do in terms of transmitting. We still need to build more capacity. It’s another promise kept, although delayed. It will be a project Lagosians will be proud of, that will improve and enhance the economic and lifestyle of Lagosians.’’

The governor said that the provision of potable water to enhance the living standard of residents was a major duty of the government, particularly in a big city like Lagos.

“Water is one critical component that the government has to meet and we are happy that Adiyan II will be living up to that responsibility,” Mr Sanwo-Olu stated.

The governor further said that efforts would be made to lay pipes across the Lagos Lagoon to get water all the way to the island and other parts of Ikoyi and Lekki.
