Adamawa begins grassroots mobilisation to end gender-based violence

The Adamawa government has begun a state-wide mobilisation exercise to create awareness of gender-based violence (GBV) to curb the menace.
Saso Benson, the permanent secretary at the women’s affairs ministry, on Tuesday, said the need to check the spate of violence against children and women birthed the exercise.
According to Ms Benson, the campaign will focus on domestic violence, rape, assault, genital mutilation and other harmful practices across 21 local government areas.
“The Violence Against Person Prohibition (VAPP) Act has been domesticated, while the state governor will soon assent to the Child Rights Bill passed by the state house of assembly,” she said.
She also advocated for women’s inclusion in decision-making processes and peace and security, adding that an action plan had been developed to encourage women’s participation in peace and security in the state.
Eighty-six countries, including Nigeria, signed the UN Security Council Resolution 1325, which seeks to protect women and children against violent conflict.
