Actor, Okey Bakassi, appointed traditional ruler in Imo community

Nigerian actor Okechukwu Onyegbule, popularly known as Okey Bakassi has been appointed as traditional ruler of the Umuihuocha Autonomous Community in Mbaise, Imo State.
In an Instagram post on Sunday, the 55-year-old comedian, posted a picture and captioned it “next level service to community, Special thanks to the entire Umuihuocha Autonomous Community….a new beginning.”
Mr Okey’s educational journey began at Alvan Ikoku Demonstration School and later attended Mbaise Secondary School before transferring to the Federal Government College, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he earned West African Senior School Certificate.
He studied Agricultural Engineering at the Rivers State University, graduating in 1992. During his National Youth Service Corps in Lagos, he served at the Nigeria Industry Development Bank. His peak time came in 1993 when he played Nick in the TV series “Fortune,” directed by Zeb Ejiro.
He later featured in films such as “Final Decision” (1996) and “All for Winnie” (1998).
In 1995, he ventured into stand-up comedy, with Opa Williams and Reginald Ebere on the show “Nite of a Thousand Laughs,” which significantly boosted his career.
His role in the 2013 film “Onye Ozi,” directed by Obi Emelonye, earned him the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) at the 2014 Best of Nollywood Awards. He also featured in the comedy TV show “My Flatmates” and hosts “It’s Okay with Okey” on Lagos Talks 91.3 FM and “The Other News” on Channels TV.
As the traditional ruler of Umuihuocha Autonomous Community, Mr Okey is expected to preserve cultural heritage, promote development, maintain peace and security, resolve communal disputes, and collaborate with authorities and youth groups.
He is also required to reside in the community and work closely with town unions to advance the welfare of his people.
