The Abia government has announced the establishment of a functional materials testing laboratory, equipped to enhance the quality of engineering projects in Umuahia.

The information commissioner, Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists on the outcome of the state’s executive council meeting held at the Government House, Umuahia.

Mr Kanu said the laboratory was located at the Umuahia Capital Development Authority premises along Nnamdi Azikiwe Secretariat Way, New Government Station Layout, Umuahia. He said the lab would conduct tests on concrete, soil, aggregate, Steel reinforcement, Asphalt flexible pavement, and Field and non-destructive testing, among others.

The commissioner stated that the laboratory, which was fully operational, would ensure that high-quality engineering and building projects were undertaken in Abia henceforth.

Mr Kanu also said plans had reached an advanced stage to recover and revitalise Abia Hotels, Umuahia, in line with the government’s plan to revive moribund industries. He said the government under the watch of Governor Alex Otti would not allow the wasting or misappropriation of Abia’s assets.

The commissioner disclosed that the TechRise ICT training cohort 2, which was ongoing, had reached an advanced stage. He said the verification of about 850 candidates had commenced at different local government areas, while the training of the successful applicants would commence on September 25.

Mr Kanu explained that the programme was part of the government’s plan to empower youths with ICT skills and prepare them for the relevant skills of the 21st century. The commissioner said the project would also increase the state’s digital workforce and enhance digital literacy, while empowering opportunities for job creation.

Mr Kanu said the Ministry of Local Government inspired the construction of four prototype markets across the 17 local councils in Abia. He said the construction of the markets would begin in two weeks and would be done in batches.

He said the markets would feature 40 open stalls with solar-powered lights, borehole facilities, and phone-charging rooms and public conveniences. He said the project would expand economic opportunities for rural Women and youths, promote grassroots entrepreneurship, and reduce rural-urban migration.
