About 95 people have died and more than 130 injured following a 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck the mountainous region in Tibet, the Chinese state media reported.

According to the BBC, the earthquake occurred around 9am local time on Tuesday near Mount Everest. Data from the United States Geography Survey showed that the quake had a magnitude of 7.1 and a depth of 10 kilometres.

Tremors were also felt in Nepal and parts of India, which neighbour Tibet.

According to China’s state media CCTV, more than 1,000 houses were destroyed including in Shigatse, which is considered one of the holiest cities of Tibet.

It was annexed by China in the 1950s and has been under tight media and internet control since then.

Speaking to Chinese media outlet Fengmian News, a resident in one of the hotels in Shigatse said he immediately knew that it was an earthquake as “It felt like even the bed was being lifted.”

Due to the location of the region, earthquakes are common in Tibet as it is on a major geological fault line, but China has not experienced many fatalities like that of Tuesday’s own in recent years.

More than 40 aftershocks were recorded in the first few hours after the quake.
