$500,000 Bribe: Supreme Court dismisses Farouk Lawan’s appeal, upholds five years’ imprisonment

The Supreme Court has affirmed the five years’ imprisonment of former member of the House of Representatives, Farouk Lawan.
The court gave the ruling in its lead judgment read by Justice Tijani Abubakar on Friday.
The panel dismissed Mr Lawan’s appeal against the judgement of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal in February 2022, that reduced the term imposed by a high court from seven to five years.
Mr Lawal, then-cairman of the House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee on Fuel Subsidy Regime.
He was arraigned in 2013 for demanding a $3 million bribe from billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola, who accused him of collecting $500,000.
The bribe was believed to have to helped influence the removal of the name of Mr Otedola’s oil firms from the list of indicted companies in the 2012 fuel subsidy scam.
In 2021, Mr Lawan was found guilty on the three count charges brought against him by the federal government with a sentence of five years each for the first two counts, and seven years for the last count, all to run concurrently.
