29 killed in Plateau road crashes in eight months: FRSC

The Plateau Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says 29 people were killed in Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) in the state between January and August.
Alphonsus Samuel, the sector commander in the state, disclosed this while lagging off the corps’ ” 2023 Ember Months Campaign” on Thursday in Jos.
He said 169 road crashes were recorded, with 124 people injured within the period under review.
”Between January and August this year, we recorded 167 RTCs in Plateau,” he stated. “Twenty-nine persons were killed while 124 others sustained various degrees of injuries.”
Mr Samuel attributed the crashes to speeding, overloading, dangerous overtaking and reckless driving.
On the flag-off, the sector said it was to sensitise motorists to obey traffic rules and regulations because of the high vehicular movements during the season.
He advised drivers to desist from overloading, speeding, night driving and other dangerous practices on the road.
Speaking at the programme, Governor Caleb Mutfwang reiterated the state government’s commitment to making all roads in the state motorable.
Represented by Sam Jatau, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Mutfwang also promised to revive Plateau Express Service to provide affordable transportation to the citizens.
”Government is struggling with competing demands, but we are desirous of making our roads motorable,” he said.
The governor, however, called on state residents to be patient with the government, saying his administration was doing everything possible to deliver dividends of democracy at all levels.
