Minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed, has solicited the support of traditional rulers toward the successful conduct of the 2023 Population and Housing Census.

He made the call when he visited the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado-Bayero, at his palace on Thursday.

Represented by Dr Garba Abari, the Director-General, National Orientation Agency (NOA), the minister said that traditional rulers have important roles to play toward the success of the headcount.

According to him, it is the responsibility of traditional rulers to ensure that their subjects give the exact
number of family members.

Mr Mohammed, also the Chairman, National Census Publicity and Advocacy Committee, said providing the exact number of family members would guarantee accurate population figures that could be used for planning.

He said that the census, scheduled for May, was designed to realise the dream of providing the needed
demographic data for the country.

The minister added that this would facilitate and place Nigeria on the pedestal of sustainable development.

Earlier, the emir promised to mobilise residents to actively participate in the exercise.

Represented by the Madakin Kano, Alhaji Yusuf Nabani, he said district and ward heads had since been mobilised to sensitise residents about the national assignment.

He said “we are working hand in hand with the state chapter of the National Population Commission to ensure the success of the exercise in Kano State.”
