The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old bride from Shuware community in the Mubi North Local Government Area of the state, Amina Hassan, for allegedly torching her husband’s house because he refused to grant her a divorce.

The police said Amina in her confession statement said that she and her husband, Muhammed Auwal, were said to have had a pre-wedding agreement that after their wedding which took place five weeks ago, he would divorce her.

Days before the wedding, Amina was also said to have informed her parents of her loss of interest in the marriage. They however insisted that the wedding must go on as scheduled, as invitation cards had already been shared.

But in her effort to ensure the dissolution of the union, Amina after the wedding, asked a native doctor to make her husband hate her and divorce her. The native doctor was said to have performed a ritual and collected N12,000 for his service.

However, the effect of the ritual didn’t turn out as expected, as it ended up making her husband more interested in the union while turning Amina’s heart away from her husband the more.

According to her, having heard that the service he rendered to her didn’t work as requested, the native doctor fled the area and relocated to Maiduguri,Borno State, after making his mobile unreachable.

According to the police, the suspect confessed to the crime and the case is under investigation as ordered by the Commissioner of Police, Afolabi Adeniyi.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, on Tuesday, quoted Amina as saying, “We made an arrangement that he would divorce me after the marriage. I met him and pleaded with him to divorce me, but he remained adamant.

“He descended on me and started beating me instead of divorcing me, as a result of which I lost my temper and set the house ablaze.’’
