20-year-old man arraigned over alleged illegal possession of firearm

A 20-year-old man, Chukwuezugo Igweobi, was on Tuesday arraigned before an Amawbia Chief Magistrates’ Court in Awka, Anambra State, over alleged illegal possession of firearm.
The Prosecutor, ASP Aduaka Achunike, told the court that the defendant was arrested by police on July 23, 2024, on Awka-Amansea Road, Awka, Anambra.
Mr Achunike said that the defendant was found in possession of one locally-made double barrette pistol, with live ammunition, without a licence from the Inspector-General of Police.
He said that when questioned on how he got the pistol, the defendant could not give a satisfactory account, thus leading to his arrest.
According to him, the offence contravenes Section 27(1)(b)(v) of the Firearms Act, Cap. F28, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge of illegal possession of the firearm.
The Chief Magistrate, O.N. Ike, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000, with one reliable surety in like sum.
She, thereafter, adjourned the case until April 2 for hearing.
