U.S. Consulate issues security alert to American citizens in Lagos

The United State Consulate General has issued security alert to Americans residing in Lagos regarding the rapid increase in crime around the mega city.
The Consulate caution its citizens to be more aware of their surroundings especially as they drive around the affluent neighbourhoods of Ikoyi and Victoria Island which it said have experienced influx of armed robbers who engage in “smash-and-grab” of belongings of their victims.
The U.S. said these criminals often operate on motorbikes and approach their prospect during traffic stoppages or intersections to harass them with weapons and extort them.
“Keep vehicle doors locked and windows rolled up at all times while driving, especially in traffic jams or at traffic lights,” the Consulate recommended.
Residents were advised to limit their night movement especially after 10:00 p.m.
The foreigners were also strongly advised to keep an extremely low profile so as not to attract criminally minded persons.
