Six killed, dozens injured after Indonesia earthquake

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s West Sumatra province on Friday, killing at least six people and injuring dozens, officials said.

The quake damaged homes and other buildings, and triggered landslides, according to officials on Friday.

“Six people have been confirmed dead so far, three in Pasaman district and the three others in West Pasaman district,” said Mr Rumainur, a spokesperson for the provincial civil protection agency.

More than 50 people were injured, 10 of them seriously, said Jasman Rijal, a spokesperson for the provincial government.

Photos released by the provincial government showed collapsed homes and a school with its ceilings blown open.

The quake struck at 8:39 a.m. (0139 GMT) with the epicentre 17 kilometres northeast of West Pasaman, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

It’s according to the Meteorological, Geophysical and Climatological Agency.
