Dowen College: Sylvester Oromoni’s mother dies

Rosemary Oromoni, mother of the late Sylvester Oromoni Jnr, whose death in 2021 sparked outrage, has died.
She reportedly passed away on November 25, after battling a blood pressure-related illness.
The Executive Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Area, Jaro Egbo, confirmed this in a Facebook post during a condolence visit to Mr Sylvester Oromoni Snr, Mr Egbo said, “Mrs Oromoni’s passing has left a void in the lives of those who knew her. Her presence will be deeply missed at this time of need.”
The late Sylvester’s sister, Blessing, shared a heartfelt prayer on Instagram, asking for God’s comfort for grieving families.
The 12-year-old Junior Secondary School 2 student of Dowen College, Lagos, died after allegedly being bullied by senior students attempting to coerce him into joining a cult.
While his family claimed he was assaulted, the school insisted he sustained injuries during a football match.
The controversy led to a Lagos State Coroner’s Inquest, which in its 255-page judgement, declared Sylvester’s death as natural but avoidable.
Magistrate Mikhail Kadiri attributed the tragedy to negligence on the part of Sylvester’s parents and doctors.
“I pray that God comforts you for this great loss and make things easy for your family,” he said, exonerating Dowen College, its staff, and the five students initially accused.
The judgement did little to heal the Oromoni family’s pain, as they rejected the verdict, citing unanswered questions, including the presence of a black substance found in Sylvester’s stomach.
Mrs Oromoni’s passing has reignited discussions about the family’s prolonged grief and unresolved trauma, with some linking her health struggles to the emotional toll of her son’s death.
