The Rivers police command have discovered the dead body of retired military captain Godfrey Zwallamark in Igbo-Etche community in the state.
Peoples Gazette learnt that the deceased was kidnapped on September 18 by armed men on a motorbike around the Agboncha axis in Eleme local government area.
State police spokesperson, Nnamdi Omoni, said the three suspects have been arrested.
He gave the names of the suspects as Frank Ishie, 39, from Utagba Ogbe community in Kwale Ndokwa East, Delta State.
Others are Iwuji Reginald, 38, from Ngugu Community in Ikeduru LGA of Imo, and Gomba Okparaji, 34, from Agbonchia in Eleme LGA, Rivers.
The gang leader, Mr Ishie, is said to have confessed to the crime, saying the retired captain was shot for refusing to pay the ramson they requested for.
Mr Omoni in a statement to The Gazette on Tuesday evening explained that the suspects had earlier requested two million naira from the deceased family.
“Investigation is still ongoing. Today we are here to exhume the remains of the victim for autopsy and possible burial.
“It could be noted that, though the victim is dead, his killers will face the law and justice will be brought to bear in circumstance.
“What is important is that they have been arrested and will be dealt with according to law as it would serve as a deterrent to others.
“Criminals have a short lifespan as their days are always numbered,” he added.
Earlier, police commissioner Friday Eboka, while addressing journalists at the scene, said the police were only informed of the kidnap a month after, adding that a few weeks after the report was made, the suspects were arrested.
