One year after, governor’s wives donate N500,000 to late Vera Uwaila’s family

First lady of Edo State, Betsy Obaseki, has on behalf of the Governors’ Wives Forum presented a cash gift of N500, 000 to parents of rape victim, Vera Uwaila, who was raped and gruesomely murdered at a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Benin, Edo state last year.
Mrs. Obaseki said Thursday that the cash gift was a gesture from the Victims Support Fund of the Nigerian Governors’ Wives Forum to show that they still commiserate with the family on the loss of their daughter.
She further explained that the Fund is sponsored by the Ford Foundation for victims of sexual and gender based violence or their families, in ineluctable situations of deaths.
Mrs. Obaseki noted that while considering the qualifying recipients of the money, the forum rated Ms. Uwaila’s case first among numerous other cases that drew national attention.
”In considering qualifying recipients of the fund, the Nigerian Governors’ Wives Forum rated the deceased Uwaila as the first among the numerous national cases.” Mrs. Obaseki said.
She also noted that although money cannot compensate for the lost life, the donation is to comfort her family on behalf of the forum.
