Lagos police caught on camera extorting N30,000 from civilian

Officers of the Lagos police command were on Sunday, along Ogudu road, mainland Lagos, severely dragged on camera for extorting N30,000 from a civilian.
In a video footage posted on social media by Debo Adebayo popularly known as Mr Macaroni, the notable actor was seen, alongside others, confronting a police team, challenging them for extorting a young man.
Mr Macaroni was seen asking police officers to return the money collected from the victim.
“That is part of the corruption we are talking about. They have collected money from him,” Mr Macaroni yelled in the viral video.
The unidentified man explained to Mr Macaroni that he was threatened by the officers to part with his money or he will be taken into custody.
The victim claimed that he transferred N30,000 to a police officer. The accused police officers, however, denied collecting money from the victim.
Spokesman for the police in Lagos, Adekunle Ajisebutu, when contacted by The Gazette Sunday evening said the police command does not condone unprofessional act and will “investigate the matter and act appropriately.”
Last week, Nigerians gathered at the Lekki tollgate to mark the one-year anniversary of the #EndSARS protest.
The historic demonstrations were held across Nigeria to demand for an end to decades of police brutality, among other injustices.
Though the government claims it has put measures in place to reform the police and restitute for years of maltreatment, critics say not much has changed in the attitude and conduct of police officers.
