Israel expands Gaza fishing zone

Israel said on Thursday it had expanded the allowed fishing zone off the Gaza Strip after closing it completely earlier this week.
The permitted range for fishing would be expanded back to 15 nautical miles, or some 28 kilometres, the office of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), Israel’s military liaison to the Palestinians, said in a statement.
“The expansion is conditional on the continuation of calm and security stability in Gaza,’’ the official said.
On Monday, Israel closed Gaza’s offshore fishing zone following rockets fired by Gaza militants toward southern Israel.
Gaza has been under an Israeli and Egyptian blockade since 2007.
