Imo jailbreak: Enugu prison braces for attack

Enugu Correctional Centre says it has beefed up security around the facility to forestall any attack that could lead to jailbreak.
The spokesman for the centre, Emeka Monday, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Enugu on Tuesday.
Mr Monday noted that the measure became necessary following Monday’s attack on the police headquarters and correctional centre in Owerri.
According to him, the centre is working with other sister security agencies to provide maximum security around the prison.
“We are aware of what happened in Imo and have put certain measures in place to ensure that such an ugly incident does not happen here.
“We are on alert and will resist any jailbreak attempt. For now, the centre is secure and safe,” Monday said.
On Monday, a correctional facility and police investigations department in Owerri were set alight by unidentified attackers in an overnight operation.
Multimedia and witnesses account on social media said the attackers struck the prison and police department shortly after midnight, freeing almost 2,000 inmates.
Heavy gunfire also rang through the area, with an account saying hundreds of inmates might have escaped.
Senior government officials were reportedly told to shelter in place due to the proximity of the scene to the Government House.
