Fire from herdsmen cigarette destroys N24 million farm produce

Fire believed to have been ignited by herdsmen destroyed farm produce worth N24 million in Gulani Local Government Area of Yobe.
The fire which started in the late hours of Tuesday, had destroyed 16 millet farms of about 115 hectares, the Local Government Information Officer, Ali Abdullahi, disclosed in Gulani on Thursday
He said the local authorities believed that the fire might have been started by a lighted cigarette stick dumped in the area.
“Usually during harvest, the wind blows strongly.
“And if herdsmen around the area drop their cigarettes on shrubs or start fire to prevent their cattle from insect bites, fire can easily start and escalate,” the official said.
Mr Abdullahi said the council chairman, Dayyabu Jibilwa, had earlier conducted an on-the-spot-assessment of the damage recorded.
He said Mr Jibilwa commiserates with the affected farmers and assured them that the state and local governments would support them to cushion the effect of their losses.
