Court remands unlicensed driver for murder, dangerous driving in Osun

A magistrates’ court in Osogbo, Osun State, on Wednesday, remanded a 46-year-old man, Akinranti Mattew, in the Ilesa Correctional Centre over an alleged dangerous driving and murder.
Mr Mattew had pleaded not guilty to an eight-count charge against him for alleged murder, dangerous driving, lack of driver’s licence, and malicious damage.
The magistrate, A. Omotosho, had ordered the defendant to be remanded in prison custody due to the magnitude of the offence being alleged.
The prosecution counsel, Akintunde Jacob, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on December 10 at about 1:30 p.m. along Ifewara highway, Osun.
Mr Jacob said the defendant drove his Nissan Vanette Bus with number plate OS 507 XB in a dangerous manner that led to the death of three persons– Paradise Okunlade, Funmilayo Okunlade and Michael Taiwo.
He said the bus driver had no driver’s licence and also drove his vehicle in a dangerous manner that led to the damage of one Bajaj motorcycle.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened the Road Traffic Laws, Vol.8 cap 115 laws of Osun 2002, and sections of the Criminal Code Laws of Osun 2002.
The defendant had no legal representation when his charge sheet was read to him by the court clerk.
The magistrate, however, adjourned the case to December 30 for mention.
