AnambraDecides: INEC rebuilds warehouse destroyed by gunmen

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says storehouses destroyed during the May attack on its facility by unknown gunmen in Anambra have been rebuilt in preparation for the November 6 governorship election in the state.
In a statement Tuesday after a meeting in preparations for the election, INEC spokesperson, Festus Okoye, disclosed that ‘appreciable progress’ has been made in fixing the facilities.
Mr Okoye said the storehouses (used to store election materials) burnt in the cause of the attack were ready to receive materials for the November governorship election.
“The Commission noted that appreciable progress has been made in fixing the facilities of the Commission destroyed during the 23% May 2021 attack on our offices.
“The burnt stores have been rebuilt and ready to receive materials, while the repairs of the Collation Centre and other affected facilities are almost completed,” he said.
Peoples Gazette in May reported that unknown gunmen attacked the B Division of the state police station and the electoral commission’s office in Akwa, Anambra.
Though a witness said he could not speak on casualty figures, he said there was the likelihood of damage at both institutions and that the gunmen might have killed people.
“I saw flames of fire going up from the police station and INEC offices. But I cannot say whether people were killed or not because I did not go closer,” the source had said.
